Choosing Laser or Inkjet Printers
by Sandy Prentice

When you're buying a computer, you will have to consider
what type of printer you want. You may choose from any
number of printers to meet your needs. Most people, however,
choose either inkjet or laser printers. Each one has pros
and cons, and you should consider what you're looking for in
a printer before you make your decision.
An inkjet printer is the technological equivalent of a
fountain pen. It actually sprays small bits of ink onto the
page. These ink splotches make letters on the page based on
magnetized plates that read your work and print it. Inkjets
tend to cost less because the technology is simpler. They
also are slower than laser jet printers. The graphics and
text have a lower resolution, meaning that they do not
appear as crisp. The ink also can smudge on an inkjet-
printed page.
Most people who select ink printers do so because of the
cost. They typically cost less than $100, even for a fairly
nice model. They are smaller and great for tight work
spaces. Home users tend to have inkjets only because you can
print more easily with an inkjet. They are fine for basic
printing needs. Replacement ink can be found inexpensively
and at many office supply stores.
Laser printers actually burn the images from your document
into a drum, which then covers the images in ink through
dipping. Then the drum prints onto the page. These printers
create sharper images than their inkjet counterparts. They
tend to be between 300 and 1,200 dpi, or dots per inch. More
dots per inch means a better quality graphic.
People with very high-end laser printers can get even better
deals out of their printers. They have professional quality
dpi. Laser printers come in black ink only or in four-color
ink. These cost quite a bit more than the black ink only
because they are much more complicated. The cost per page is
lower on these printers than inkjet, so you can recoup the
cost of getting a more expensive machine if you print en
masse.
People in offices use laser jets especially if they work in
graphic design or desktop publishing. The laser jets work
faster than inkjets, and they can print a wider variety of
fonts, images, and sizes of paper. They also don't make as
much noise because of the way they work, making them
appealing for many people. They may print up to 10 pages
every minute.
Just because laser jets offer better technology doesn't mean
they're the choice for you. Inkjets tend to work best for
personal use or home-based businesses because of their size
and cost. For a busy office, though, and inkjet will wear
out long before a laser jet. Finding the right one depends
on your needs, so make sure you take the time to look for
the right printer.
