Household Cleaning Tips For Your Ink-jet Desktop Printer
by Charly Delmont

If your inkjet desktop printer were a kitchen appliance,
would you find it easier to maintain or clean? Many people
are comfortable pulling storage bins out of the refrigerator
and wiping them down with a damp cloth. However, do you
cringe at the thought of removing your inkjet cartridge and
lightly wiping down the inkjet heads? While many people
feel intimidated about just turning on the printer, a
desktop printer will run better and last longer the more
frequently you make the effort to clean it and do simple
maintenance.

Troubleshooting on a desktop printer doesn't require a
mechanic's license or doctorate. In fact, most desktop
printers fix themselves. For example, the mere action of
turning on a printer starts a diagnostic testing and
performs a fast cleaning. Some other helpful tips to keep
your kitchen appliance ~ Er, desktop printer ~ running
smoothly are below:

~ A toaster collects crumbs just like a printer. While a
toaster catches crumbs in a tray, a printer's cartridge
builds up ink droplets that can dry and clog the cartridge
heads. This problem gets worse as the printer sits unused a
long time. By running a long cleaning cycle or gently
swiping the heads with a clean dry cloth, this problem is
corrected and ink flows more evenly.
~ Similar to kneading bread, by lifting the cartridge lock
and pushing it back down, the cartridge ink burps out air
and releases trapped air in the settled ink. Another method
that works is removing the cartridge, gently shaking it and
returning it in its place.
~ Just like baking pan drippings that spill onto the oven
floor, paper jams leave behind scraps that need to be
cleaned. Eventually these spills jam the paper feed and
affect the rollers from working right. By simply opening
the slot in the back of the desktop printer, you can pull
out these tidbits.
~ Paper jams aren't always caused by paper; foreign objects
also work their way inside. These types of jams sound just
like a spoon caught in a dough blender. Once again, open
the back slot area and remove the object. A lot of times,
pen caps and paper clips mysteriously work their way into
the sliding cartridge area. If you don't remove these
foreign objects soon enough, the printer may become
non-fixable.
~ Kitchen splash boards are notorious for gathering dust,
so too are the insides of desktop printers. Paper dust in
trays tends to work its way inside the printer and gum up
operations. A light vacuuming gets most of this dust.
However, be careful not to let the suction touch the
printer. Also, you can lightly wipe the paper tray with a
window cleaner such as Windex.

If you do discover that the repairs are beyond your ability,
you can always call the toll free help line number that
comes along with your desktop inkjet printer or take your
printer into a repair center. In many cases, you may find
that the cost for repairs is not worth your money and time
in comparison to purchasing a new desktop inkjet printer.

You can also purchase special desktop printer cleaning kits
just for ink-jet printers from a retailer or the
manufacturer. For the ambitious cleaner, these kits
contain items such as foam tipped buds, solvent cleaning
fluid, cleaning sheets and compressed air.
